I Am Chosen

Have you ever felt overlooked, unwanted or cast-aside?

Have you been looking to others to meet your needs rather than God?

Everything we need for this life we can find in Jesus. If you struggle with the core belief that you are always passed by and never chosen, dig deep into the Word of God with me in this devotional and allow me to show you how much you are chosen by God. You can know in your heart that the God who created you chooses you. You have been hand-picked by him to fulfil a purpose and the calling he has placed on your life. When you are able to accept this truth into your heart, you will no longer fear being accepted or “chosen” by people because you are confident you have already been chosen by God and that alone will meet your need.

The Greek word for chosen is eklegó meaning to select or make a choice. When I’m studying the bible I love to choose words and look at their synonyms and also the opposites in some cases. I feel this can give extra gravity to the meaning of the words you are looking at. And in some cases the English language seems to fall short through translation, which leads to losing the impact of the words as they were originally written.

When I look at the word chosen and what that means it can be defined as selected, hand-picked, appointed, adopted, nominated, elected, preferred, wanted. The opposite to chosen would be refused, rejected, declined, turned down, discarded, disapproved and thrown away.

I am sure there isn’t a single person who hasn’t at some time in their life felt rejected or discarded. Where this begins to affect us deeply is when this becomes a core belief of who we are – as though who we are deserves rejection, or to lose and never be picked. And when we walk around in life with that as our core belief that is what we will attract. What you believe about yourself is so so important and the words you speak over yourself hold great power (see Proverbs 18:21).

So how do we change this core belief about ourselves to where we can truly wholeheartedly believe we are chosen by God to the point we start to carry ourselves differently and interact with others differently, because we are no longer looking to the approval of others to see if we will be chosen. We know we already are.

A good place to start is by speaking the words, “I am Chosen” over yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror and make eye contact with yourself as you do. It is important that you speak the words and don’t just think them. Speaking carries power for believers. As a Christian you have the power of the Holy Spirit alive on the inside of you and the words you speak have an effect. If you speak negatively then you can expect what you speak. The same is true when you speak positively.

I have used biblical affirmations and they have really helped to change some negative core beliefs in my life to where I now carry myself differently. I have no expectations on other people to meet my needs, and in that place I found freedom.

Another thing we must continue to do is to dig deep into the Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you and guide you to a deeper understanding. Seek out wise counsel from mature Christians within the church you are planted in. I found when I started to talk about what I was going through and didn’t hold onto things so tightly, they didn’t have as much power over me. What you bring into the light has a chance to heal. It’s not advised to go and tell everyone everything but ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to the right people who can support you and mentor you as you walk through your journey. Before too long, you’ll find that you become the mentor who is helping to set others free from what you have experienced.

There are other places within God’s Word that also emulate this same message. It’s as if God thought we wouldn’t believe it if he only told us the one time, so he littered the whole bible with promises of how much he loves and cares for us. He chose us from the very beginning of time.
